The Government put into effect Oil and Gas Law No. 22/2001 regarding the Management of Oil and Gas Industry in Indonesia on November 23, 2001. The Law brings a very significant change to oil and gas sector, including Pertamina. In the aftermath of the coming into effect of such Law, Pertamina has the same status as other oil and gas business actors. The form of PERTAMINA changed to PT Pertamina (Persero) on September 17, 2003 and based on Government Regulation (PP) No. 31/2003, Pertamina was mandated to shift geothermal business that had been managed all this time by PT Pertamina to its Subsidiary by no later than two years following the establishment of the company. For that purpose, PT Pertamina established PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PT PGE) as a subsidiary to manage business activity in the field of geothermal energy.
PT Pertamina has management rights to 15 geothermal Business Working Areas (WKPs) with a total potential of 8,480 MW equivalent to 4,392 MMBOE. Out of the 15 WKPs, 10 WKPs are managed by PT PGE alone, namely (1) Kamojang: 200 MW, (2) Lahendong: 60 MW, (3) Sibayak: 12 MW, (4) Ulubelu, (5) Lumutbalai, (6) Hululais, (7) Kotamubagu, (8) Sungai Penuh and (9) Iyang Argopuro and (10) Karahabodas. Three areas of them have been in production with a total capacity of 272 MW equivalent to 12,900 BOEPD. The rest are those managed jointly with partners and have production capacity of 922 MW.
Pertamina Geothermal in its business has always focused on activities to increase production in the three operation areas (Kamojang, Lahendong and Sibayak). Total products generated from the 3 existing operation areas are 9.5 million tons of steam with a generation of 1.3 million MWh. In addition, the contribution of KOB is 30.37 million tons of steam and 4.1 million MWh. Total annual geothermal steam products are 39.89 million tons with a power generation of 5.36 million MWh.
PT PGE constitutes a company orientated to an Integrated Operation Activity, wherein all operation activities are conducted by Total Project where all projects ranging from upstream up to downstream activities are conducted, such as PLTP Kamojang Unit 4 which constitutes the success of our hard work.
